Q: The paintings of Eugene Von Bruenchenhein that you chose for Rin, Tongue and Dorner are full of flames and monuments—features of Tongue’s asteroid—but EVB painted them in 1954. Were you thinking about the book back then?
RS: No, I was six years old. But EVB had a lot to do with helping me to create the asteroid, Vapos. He was a collaborator. His paintings were an important part of the invention.
